I hope to help you..

I think you must download firebug, then download page speed (a google plugin to test site speed) and yslow (another plugin).

When you have installed them, run speed test and follow the tips they give to you.

I think you can begin enabling gzip or zlib compress on your server by php admin and .htaccess .
