Smart Cache creates many files

Today I had to turn off smart cache because I noticed in one of my cache folders there were 200K files.

The (not so) smart cache just keeps dumping new cache files like a Lemming.

 

Any ideas how to tackle this? Do you run cron jobs, did you choose another method or addon for this? Or do you just clean it out manually from time to time?

Just clean it out from time to time smart cache will improve page load speed you can test the dif here.  https://gtmetrix.com/

I actually only clean this out when making changes to files but during file editing I also turn it off and force compile on.
