Abandoned Carts And Carts In General

I noticed  I was slowing up quite a bit in the back office, when I would add an order via the back office add order facility

 

And looking at the amount of carts under the purchasers name I thought maybe I need to clean them up as thats probably slowing things down.

 

I clicked on shopping carts from the Customer Menu  and I had 38,000  of them  15,000  were abandened carts which I have mostly deleted apart from the recent ones  which we chase up.

 

What about the 23000  that remain  can these be safely deleted to open up some back office speed or are these carts directly linked to actual real orders, I don't want to delete these and find all my sales records vanish at the same time.

If they are actual orders they are linked to order,carriers, customers and so on and can not be deleted from BO anyway.
