Show categories block on product pages

For some reason I cannot see the categories block on product pages here;

Can anyone please tell me a simple solution to this, which I clearly missed

If you go on home your categories will appear. 

How did you set up them in backOffice?

which theme is this? looks like product template is designed that way, because it covers the width of the page there is no space for left sidebar in template

oh it is default bootstrap theme... no idea if it is configurable. definitely you can add left column in template

I am not sure if I am asking the wrong question, the wrong way - all I want is the menu/block that appears here:

To get round any troubling concerns with who is smarter than who and who should know what and doesn't, can we please just assume that I don't know how to do this (really not a clue) and that I genuinely need some help here.

You should try to turn on left column

Preferences->Themes->Advanced settings

 

And hook

Categories block module on to Left column.

 

If this does not work, I guess you will need to find/code some module for categories display
