Link to database cannot be established: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2054]

HI,

   I had a site that all of a sudden is no longer working.  (trubread.com)   When I go to the site I get an error:  Link to database cannot be established: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2054] The server requested authentication method unknown to the client

Reading the forums, some suggested deleting the DB user, creating a new one, and giving them full access.  I did that, and still not working.   I then tried to upload a backup of the DB into a new DB in phpmyadmin.   Created a new user, and still no luck.  Same error.  

 

Does anyone have any ideas, and can point me in the right direction?   Any help would be appreciated.
