upgrade from 1.4.8 to 1.6.1 keeping ONLY the mySQL database

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I have been running with no problems a website for 3 years without upgrading it. It was made using 1.4.8 prestashop and an outside theme called "matrice", then modified by me for cosmetic purposes only.

Now I want to completely change my website, that means that I don't care about the old theme or the modifications that I made, because I will buy an updated template. This new theme is ready for 1.6.1.

The Database, though, is very important, obviously, since it keeps all my past orders, customers info, product info, etc... and that I want to keep safe. I will do a database backup on my computer obviously, first thing of all.

Then, once I have done the database backup, what's the best option to proceed? I would like as much of a clean install as possible, so all the files and folders that are not useful anymore in the new theme are deleted from the server and don't take space or create any disruptance.

I would also preffer to do this on the live site (at night, in mantainance mode) rather than creating a test site, if that's not an inconvinience, to make things easier / faster.

thanks in advance.

Well I can certaonly offer my services to upgrade your store, however this is something you could attempt to do yourself.

I would suggest you make a test copy of your current store, and then perform the upgrade using the auto upgrade module.  Test to make sure the upgrade works, upgrade any modules you are using, install a new theme and make sure things still working correctly.

If everything is good then repear the process on your live store.

If you are looking for paid upgrade services, feel free to send me a PM or contact me on my website

thank you. My message was more in the line of having a clean install of the new theme on a clean install of prestashop, and then get the old database to use with it. I am not sure if that's possible anyway.

Regarding your post, when you say making a test copy, should I copy the whole "public_html" folder and then copy it in the home root as well ? (like a public_html_2) or which one? and where?

thanks

I wrote a still rather crude tool for this kind of functions (https://www.prestashop.com/forums/topic/445453-copy-shopdata-script-for-copying-shop-content-for-upgrade/) and I am also available for paid services. I suggest you read the manual of that tool to get some feeling of what is involved.

Two remarks:

 - half the database is configuration related. To do what you want you should only copy the business data related tables.

 - after doing the upgrade you will need to take some time to configure the shop: making sure all the desired modules have been added with their latest version and also being filled in correctly with config data, setting up the desired kind of stock keeping, checking whether everything looks ok, etc. So, I Bellini suggested, I would start with a copy of the site on your localhost. If you start on your live server there is good chance that at the end of the night you will have to decide to set back the backup as too much things still need to be improved.
