European vat number module error

I am using the prestashop european vat number module, but when it has to check a VAT number it gives an "can't reach service" error. Does anyone know how to debug this? I can't hardly find anything about this module.

Increase timeout in the /modules/vatnumber/vatnumber.php file:

        @ini_set('default_socket_timeout', 10);
