Additional charge for customised items.

Hi

I'm selling shirts, and have added customisation fields for name and number (like a football shirt). In store, I charge £1 per letter and £4 per number.

 

Is there a way of adding this functionality to the site? It seems like it should be so simple just to make an additional charge per character, but I can't find anything that's suitable.

 

For instance, if someone wants "RONALDO 7" on the back, I create custom fields called Name, and Number, and the customer fills in what they want. Just need to figure out a way to charge for it!

 

There is a shirt printing module, but there's a lot of stuff on there that I don't need, like image upload and previews.

The only thing I can think of without using some more complex modules is to add product combination for each of the letter count, changing the price, and then ask the customer to select it (or maybe add some simple JS counting letters and selecting the option). Not very straightforward.

Thanks for the reply. It's a shame as it seems like it should be so simple to implement, but it's a major stumbling block as far as continuing to build a store with PS is concerned

If you have a budged you should hire a developer to do custom module for you. 

I never seen that anybody needed such functionality before.

Brilliant module and great support. Should also be good for people who want to charge by weight or dimensions.

The per character part is what makes this difficult. There are a lot of modules that allow you to charge for a text field entry but the amount is the same for one letter as for multiple letters.

 

The cheapest and easiest way to do this would be to have the text field and then have the customer select an attribute from 1 to 15 or 1 to 20 whatever the max letters is. The two big negatives are that you are relying on customer to be accurate and will have to waste time on fixing issues when customers select the wrong number of letters. It also is not really very professional.

 

Easy but probably more expensive than it should be would be to hire a developer. 

 

Last option is to just hack it out yourself. This is a pretty easy modification to make even if you only have very basic coding skills.
