Unable to upload images to category or product

Running 1.61.1. this is a new installation not an upgrade. I'm just using the default-boostrap theme

 

Having major trouble uploading images to products - click upload but just get a red bar and exclamation mark (see attached screenshot).

 

Have searched all the forums and followed the tips - file size, invalid characters, folder permissions etc etc but it still fails MOST of the time. Every now and again I manage to upload an image if I keep trying but then it starts failing again on the next product (so it's obviously not the image itself) and if I persist long enough - it will eventually upload but at this rate I'll still be tryiing to add my images in 2020.

 

I've tried Firefox and Google on Windows 8 and Firefox and Safari on Mac. All are the same.

 

This is very frustrating I'd really appreciate any help or ideas.

Are you using cloudflare?
ANyway, open up the browser's console, tab to network, then try uploading. You should see an ajax call. See what it returns and screen it
