What should I look for when I offer a job to a programmer?

Recommended Posts

I just got rip off by a jerk programmer not long ago. I am trying to get another programmer to set up my site. I got few applicants from this forum. When I checked on their old threads, they were asking very stupids questions in the forum, or offer very non-sence solutions to other people's threads and kept asking people to hire him. How in the world I can hire this people to do my website? But what should I look and ask to find out if the programmer is good? I am willing to pay but I am not stupid. Any suggestion?

Is it ok for me to chime in just so its us four on the thread again? ;)

On the high price point, slapping a high price on garbage work is easy to do, but you'd never sell yourself for dirt when you do good quality work. ie a high price tag doesnt necessarily mean its worth it, but if its an unusually low price tag that definately is a bad sign.

The part I would rely more on is to expect to see prior work, and verify that they in fact did that work, that those references are legitimate and not made up.

Unfortunately even well vetted prospects can end up sour, but it gives you a better shot at not wasting you money, or at the least they're not just blatant scammers like the last guy and will actually be honest with you if they can't/won't do the work.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly are you trying to get done? It makes a big difference because someone with no knowledge at all will often thinks task a is simple and b is complex based on what they see and know, when in actuality its the exact opposite. (why I stay away from design, everybody and their mother marginalizes your hard work to "my high school kid can do it for $50!" ugh yea and itll look like your high school kid did it but anyhow end rant..)

If its a trivial task a less experienced coder could get the job done, but if its a difficult task we can probably tell you up front you'll need someone with higher skill sets. I'm not sure where tomerg's skill and experience falls besides higher than mine but I'm sure we know enough to judge the difficulty of your job for you at the least or help you with the process better than vague tips on the process.

I am not doing a big website, it is just a beginning one. I want to have an unique themes with paypal and Google check out. And I need to upload 400 images.
Hey Star, do you set up website for others? I like your work, I can use your service if you are doing it. I see your site and it is beautiful. Did you really set up your site with no other programmer help?

I did set up my website with out hiring a programmer at the end. I was forced to set up my website as I had paid $1900 to 3 programmers and I got nothing in return, not even a single file. When I was looking for a good programmer in Deacember 2008, Rocky, Tomer and eihwaz were not around, and Prestashop forum was very new. I had to take whatever the programmers said they are good at. As a result, I got myself in trouble.

I am not a good programmer, I am still learning. You should go for a professional programmer that can show you what they can do for you, instead of tell you what they can do for you. I am sure there are plenty of good programmers here in the forum, but I am not familiar with them. I can only tell you I am using the above individual's modules or tips on my website. I am a picky shop owner, I don't really use other third party's modules unless I know they are good. But when I download other's modules, I will thank them for sharing it but it doesn't mean that I will use them on my site.

Good luck to you.

1. Do you know how to install the script? . css? html? php? JS? I don't know how much you know about programming.

2. Uploading 400 products is nothing. I can show you how to do it or even do it for you free of charge. Just let me know when you are ready to do it.

3. Make a themes unique is not hard. There are plenty of free themes around. They look good, but there are 15 million people are using the same themes because they look good, well, it becomes no good. And some of the free themes look good but not functional. Us the default themes as a base, and work from there.

4. Use only good modules. Sometimes you may need to buy the modules instead of using free modules. Some free modules are very good. Don't install all of the modules that you think they are neat. Only install the modules you think they are good and needed. It will make your shop looks clean.
