How are different image sizes actually stored

Hi

 

I am a little bit confused about the image sizes.

 

We currently have a max image size that is 600x600px used for the thickbox on the product page. This means until now we have also uploaded images that are physically 600x600 px in size.

 

However, starting now, we would like to upload images that are 800x800 px instead.

 

So, my questions are:

 

1. Will Prestashop always store the original image or do I have to create a new image type in Preferences/Images with the size 800x800 for it to be stored?

 

2. If I decide to start using the 800x800 images later on, how will Prestashop handle all the old images that are only 600x600. Will they be upsized or will it just add a white border around them?
