Gray out 'Out of Stock' items in drop down box

After a search I couldn't find a solution and maybe someone can help. I was wondering if it is possible to "gray out" or "strike through" 'out of stock' items in the drop down box similar than eBay?

 

Right now, a customer will have to choose a size or color before he/she will see if the item is out of stock.

There is no simple solution. The only easy one would be using a third party module like attribute wizard pro. Otherwise it's a series of headaches, trying to target each single box, compare it with others, see the combination, and grey them out  progressively if the combo is not available

Thank you for the response. May have to look into this as a feature because it's convenient for customers to immediately see what items are on backorder rather than to click on an item.
