FATAL ERROR when trying to change order status - but not always!

Hi!

 

My client has reported to me that she suddenly cannot change the order status for 2 of her most recent orders. In between these 2 orders she had another one and on that one she was able to change the status without difficulty.

 

When she tries to change the status on the problem orders, she gets directed to a blank page with just the words "Fatal Error" on it - no other hint about what might be wrong.

 

Does anybody have any idea what might be the problem?

 

The PS version is 1.5.4.0

UPDATE: We just noticed that there are other past orders where we now also can't change the status, even though at the time we were able to change it to Shipped. An odd common characteristic of all of the problem orders seems to be that they have at least one product in the order where the product image is not displayed at the bottom of the Order screen. Furthermore, any of the problem orders also don't allow any messages to be sent to the customer.

So it looks like there are 3 symptoms: 1) Product image not displayed, 2) cannot change status and 3) cannot send messages
