troubleshooting: admin page results in blank page on fresh install

I have problems getting prestashop up and running.
The install process completes correctly, but after deleting the "install" directory and renaming admin the backend address results in a blank result (no content returned at all).

This issue is the same whether using the stable or the alpha release. The frontend is working fine, provided I choose the "full install" - if not, the frontend goes blank too.

This is on a FreeBSD 8 system with the following packages:
