cloud vs self-hosted

alber99

Question

I'm a professional web designer for many years (custom sites, Joomla, Wordpress, Opencart, etc) but no expericne yet with PS.  I am considering recommending PS to a low-budget customer and am intrigued by the Cloud option - in part to avoid maintenance chores (backups, updates, security, etc) and costs of hosting.

Seeking the thoughts of someone who has had first-hand experience with both PS Cloud and self-hosted.  What would you say has been your experiences (pro/con) with each version (Cloud vs self-hosted)?

My customer sells about 1000 different items - mp3 files for download and some physical products (books and flash drives). They currently have an old custom-made php cart and process though Paypal Pro.  They do about 100 transactions per month.

If you read here in the forum you will see that Prestashop Cloud has several restrictions. It is only a package, open account, add your products and use the software (out of the box - without any possibility to install non paid extras and only some smaller adaptations possibility on theme/modules.) On a later point you are not able to move your project for free to a self hosted service (restricted ftp). Custom made things not possible and restricted to certified paid modules and paid themes only.

See here other restrictions: https://www.prestashop.com/forums/topic/442317-prestashop-cloud-confusions/ and older topics.

If you need to have a "complete" control of the code, to customize whatever you want, add your own modules, you should use Prestashop Download.

With Cloud, you can "only" add modules from Addons.prestashop.com, but you can use overrides, modify templates and modules once they are bought.

We provide a mutual OVH hosting with more restrictions than on a dedicated hosting (3Gb hosting, 300Mb Database, 20Gb bandwith) but of course enough to have a good ecommerce activity :)

Here are some examples of Cloud stores.

Please open/add one topic for ONE problem only. This topic is related to another question.

How to import themes:
