Paypal 'Internal Server Error - Read'

I have a problem with a prestashop paypal integration: error message is:

'Internal Server Error - Read'

 

I tried following the instructions to switch from SSL to TLS (using old paypal module and changing PHP code), and for a while, paypay was running fine.

 

Recently, attempts to check out lead to paypal timing out with the following page being displayed

Internal Server Error - Read
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

I have tried re-installing the Paypal module from the addons site manually but still have the same issue.

Paypal module 3.8.2,   Prestashop version 1.5.6.0

 

Once I understand the reason for this error I will post back any information I have learned from those helping me.
