Host store from home on own server

Recommended Posts

Hey. I just wanted to get people's opinion on whether it is a good idea to host your online store on your own server from home. I'd like to know if anyone else has done this. Also, what in your opinion are the positives and negatives to this approach compared to choosing to host your site with a hosting company.

A Basic setup will be at least one server plus storage. Commercial grade hardware-based firewall. 2 x 512Mb internet connections with static IP, to maintain uptime these should enter the premises via diverse physical routes. Backup server, there are many network storage based ones now that can recover to within the hour and run continuously. UPS+conditioning. Generator in case of power problems, Air-con and fire protection. Spare hardware to recover (second server would mitigate the need to hold so many spares).

Skills: Advanced : System administration, firewall installation/configuration, network troubleshooting, mail server configuration and troubleshooting, DNS troubleshooting. Any mistakes will be all for your own account.

Answer. To do it "properly" even to the standard of a low-grade package bought from a reseller at $4USD/month is just far too expensive to be worth it. You might also need to consider little things like of-site backup, insurance etc. I doubt your household insurance policies will cover you.

In short, unless you really know what you are doing, there is no reason to host it from home.

You can get good hosting for as little as $6-7 a month, some will give you a good price on the domain name, and also $50 free adwords (like Bluehost which you can see on my site).

Thanks for the replies. I think you've made me realise that its not really the route that I want to take. It'll probably cost too much money and be too much work.

The reason that I was asking is that I've been looking at various hosting options. I'm currently with justhost, but too be honest it's quite crap. I've been looking at cloud hosting as a cheaper alternative to a dedicated server. You two seem to have alot more knowledge than me on this topic. Any thoughts on cloud hosting?

Edit: Just wanted to say that I'm looking forward to that forum module that I saw was a work in progress Paul. Any news on that?
