what you can do is create a folder in your shop root, upload your free files there.

then on your product, you can add button that points to the file you are giving away for free.

Thank you! I've followed your suggestion and it is working ;)

I have another question:

How can I have free downloadable items and provide them to customers for free without using the entire payment process?

Just register (or login) and download.

use one page checkout,  not the 5 step process (back office-->preferences-->orders-->select one page checkout

this way you get them to register, but as it's a free download, there would be no payment prorcess...but they could then mix a free with paid download....they will then receive email with link to download but can also download from their account/orders.

note: you can also use catalog attachments, back office-->catalog-->attachment  then edit a product-->attachment-->and attache the virtual download here.  This will create a tab on your product.  Some themes will also display number of downloads when using attachments.

Ok, so far so good.

And now, how do I prevent Prestashop asking the delivery address at the checkout for free downloadable products?

You would need to hack Prestashop.   This is not a big deal but you must either do it yourself or hire it out.  I don't suggest this route if you are going to sell anything because payment gateways will want that info.
