Registration not working correctly on checkout

I've had a few problems with registration on checkout and I thought they had all been fixed and all was working, but I noticed most customers have made 3 accounts before they finaly check out, which was odd.

I looked into it and for some reason when a customer registers, they click 'register' and it doesnt take them any further to the checkout process... it stays on the registration page... and they obviously think something has gone wrong so they try again... but then it says a user has already registered with that email... so they try a different one... as a result they end up registering with 3 different email addresses.

The solution is that after going to checkout... then registering... they then have to click 'login to my account' and login, then go back to their cart and continue checkout whilst already logged in...

Anyone else had this problem and is there a way to fix it? It is a big problem and is costing me a lot of sales as people dont think they can go any further than the registration process, they think my website doesnt work...

How can I make it so they go directly to the next stage of checkout after successfully registering a new account?
