Having custom theme issues with the index page & columns

I seem to have a problem with a custom theme and my PrestaShop 1.6 site.   I have Left & Right columns enabled, which work on every page except the index page.    

 

Instead of showing the columns:  LEFT / CENTER / RIGHT

it shows them as:
LEFT 

CENTER

RIGHT

In google chrome, for a split second right as you first load the page... all three columns look correct, side-by-side.  But then after the page is finished loading, all columns change??

I sent a support ticket to the people who created the theme, and their reply was:
"Unfortunately simple-great index page is design only one column . You can not use left or right column in home page. You can use column inner page like category or product. This is how our designer design our theme ."

 

I find it hard to believe that most every other theme out there supports columns on the index page,  and yet this one can not???   There has got to be a way, and Im hoping somebody here can point me in the right direction.
