Using Google Webfonts in Top Horizontal Menu

Having given up trying to install a custom font, I have instead turned to google webfonts as it appeared this was more common and wold therefore be easier. However, I've followed the various guides, downloaded the free module and placed the text in the relevant files but to no avail. I wondered if anyone would be so kind as to point me in the direction of a step-by-step idiots guide or provide me with detailed instruction on how I change the top horizontal menu to a google webfont.
