questions for all about 1.2.5 upgrade experience

I have been using Prestashop for about a year, love it mostly but upgrade to 1.2.x has not been so good. I'm looking to see if there's a pattern in who is able to upgrade vs. who isn't. Please answer the following questions (here, so all can see) about your upgrade experience, if you were previously using version 1.1 and upgraded, or attempted to, for 1.2.5.

1) do you have a web page above prestashop, or is prestashop in the highest level directory (i.e. do customers come straight into your shop, or is there a level above that)?
2) were you able to use the Prestashop recommended upgrade procedure successfully? if not, did you manage to upgrade using some other procedure? if so, did you have success on the first time, or did you have to upload the 1.2.5 code multiple times?
3) is your prestashop installed on a Linux or Windows server? if virtual, what hosting company?
4) what version of PHP are you using?

First, my answers:
1) I have a directory level above prestashop, that is running other CMS software
2) I have NOT been able to successfully upgrade to 1.2.5, using prestashop recommended procedure or any other
3) I am running on Ubuntu Linux, hosted by linode
4) I have tried versions 5.2.4 and 5.2.8 of php
