How to upgrade from 1.4.7 to 1.6.x (latest version)

Recommended Posts

HI,

we want to upgrade our e-commerce store from 1.4.7 to 1.6.x and would be much appreciated if some one could guide us with a few questions?

1) Can anyone recommend if it is better to use the prestashop 1 click upgrade (which is free) and have our developer take care of the tweaks OR would a migration service like cart2cart (costs $200) be better?

You would typically use cart to cart service if you are creating a new store and you want to migrate your old data to the new store.  If you are just trying to upgrade your existing store, then I would suggest using the 1 click upgrade.

2) I performed the 1 click upgrade before and the site had a lot of errors and i think was not functional, but now its different because we have a web developer. Would it be best to ask our web developer to copy our website to a subdomain and then perform the 1 click upgrade there on the subdomain?

You should never touch your live production store without testing the upgrade on a test copy of the store.  So yes, the developer should do that

3) If i have a web developer, whos experienced, how long do you think it would take him to do the 1 click upgrade and all the work involved (approximately, if it goes ok).

This really depends on your store and what kind of customizations, modules, themes etc you have.  The 1 click update itself should only take about 30 minutes to complete, but that does not address all the other aspects of the upgrade (theme, modules etc...)

4) Is the one click upgrade the proper method of upgrading prestashop? Or do web developers use a different technique?

There is a manual upgrade process that can be used, but you should stick with the 1 click upgrade first
