Automatically add an item to shopping cart for product with combinations

Hello,

I'm hoping someone has suggestions on how to go about adding an item to the cart for combo products that meet specific requirements. I thought perhaps I could do this with product packs but found that combo products can't be included in packs.

 

Our (1.6.09) catalog has products with at least 4 different attributes each, for each of these products I need to charge a refundable deposit for specific attributes. 

 

So if cart contains:

Item 1, size S, $10

Item 2, size L, $50

Item 3, size XL, $50

 

I need to add an amount to each of the size large items.

Item 1, size S, $10

Item 2, size L, $50 + $3

Item 3, size XL, $50 + $5

 

or

Item 1, size S, $10

Item 2, size L, $50

Item 3, size XL, $50

Item 2, deposit $3

Item 3, deposit $5

 

As the additional amount is refundable we'd like to avoid building it into the combinations themselves.
