Midwinter
Hi all. The title says it all really... Quite simply, once the site is live and in use - is it safe and or possible to add products to the shop without using maintenance mode? In addition to this, is it ok to have multiple data being entered at the same time from different back office users? Thank you. mickeyboy1
Yes you can add products to your site without putting it in maintenance mode. Just be aware that as soon as you add a product it becomes live and visible. Probably best to add your product Name, but then disable product until you have all the other info filled in...I.E price, images etc Then once you are happy with your listing you can enable it for all to see
Midwinter
Thank you very much for your quick response. Do you happen to know if it's ok to have more than one person at a time entering data?
Guest
Might be pertinent to ask why? Why do you need more than one person creating products at the same time? My initial thought is because you have a lot to enter, in which case why not do it via CSV upload?
Midwinter
Um, yes, there's a lot of products. I've not done a CSV upload yet - and I'm a bit nervous in case I screw something up. I'm guessing it's quite easy? In fact, I just gave it a try, uploading one product to the product list. Unfortunately, it didn't get appended to the database, but overwrote it, even though the relevant overwrite product id button was set to off/no...so I don't really trust that idea anymore... So my original question still stands. Can two or more people enter product data directly into the back office at the same time? BarryH
Good question. I've wondered about this myself. I can think of several reasons to have multiple people working back office at the same time. I too have a LOT of products to add. I started with back office, then downloaded eMagicOne Store Manager trial version. It is a lot faster to work on a local PC app and then upload changes, even without import function. I was reluctant to dive into CSV upload, even with Store Manager. Over time, I increased my imports from 2 products to 10 to 25 to 50. My last import was 250 products and I'm feeling MUCH more confident. I don't have a horse in this race but I'm finding Store Manager well worth the price and fully intend to purchase. parsifal
If your MySQL database is using the InnoDB engine, then you should be safe (ACID-compliancy and all). But what would happen if two or more people opened the same product for editing, edited different parts of the product details and clicked on Save button, is a different matter altogether. Hint: if I'm not mistaken, if you open a product for editing and then click the Save button, your browser will POST all the temporary loaded product details, not only the parts you have changed. Imagine what this means if 2 or more people open the same product at roughly the same time, then change different parts of this product and try to save them. I think that only the changes of the last POST request would be retained in the end...
