Customers register, but accounts are automatically disabled?

I just noticed something strange.  I received an email from a customer stating that when he tries to place an order and log in, it would just direct him back to the login page.  So I looked him up by his email address and saw that he had an account created two days ago, but that it was disabled.  So out of curiosity, I checked all customer registrations for the last two months.  I have a LOT of customers that registered, but their accounts are disabled.  I did not disable them.  A few have been activated properly, but probably 70% of new registrations are disabled.  Any ideas why this is happening?
