Cannot access web services

When I try to access web services in Prestashop 1.6.0.8 through a browser and enter the key, I get no access and the login window keeps showing up over and over. In back office I have enabled "Webservice" and "CGI mode for PHP" and set full privileges on everything. My hosting server is running Apache and I have been told that they have installed the required extension on their side and cannot do anything more without any error message.

I have seen here that this problem has occurred on previous Prestashop version, and have tried some of the recommended solutions, such as adding code to .htaccess and dispatcher.php, cleaning the cache, turning web services on and off etc. Nothing has worked and I am not even sure these apply to 1.6. I tried with a clean install of Prestashop, but it did not work there either.

I am new to Prestashop and no programmer, but I am usually able to fix most issues. Any suggestions for solutions (or what to ask/tell the hosting company) would be much appreciated.
