add a new block into homepage

Hello everyone, I am a php programmer, is a long time since I install prestashop but I always bought the third-party themes, it always worked out pretty well but this time I find myself forward to a request from my client that I can not fix .

Everything works perfectly, below the slider on the homepage I need to place a vertical menu with the categories on the left and in the center a slider for products that the customer decides to publish. I stopped because I do not know exactly where to go to work in the theme to enter this area where he will insert the modules that fit in with my needs.

 

how do I add this additional area? what is the proper procedure to ensure to add into it the modules i need?
I realize that the question might seem generic but I need initial help to understand how to proceed in the right way, thank you.
