install error message "Database Server is not found" is too VAGUE

Recommended Posts

I am a newbie with PrestaShop, I have installed shopping carts and other scripts before, but it has been awhile.  I wanted to try a shopping cart for some material that I have had success selling in online stores, such as eBay and Etsy.  I reviewed a bunch (12) different carts before deciding on giving PrestaShop a whirl.

I was very frustrated with the error message "Database Server is not found".  It is too darned VAGUE.  The least it could do is pinpoint the problem.  I checked all of my settings quite a few times, then tried different combinations, nothting worked.  I searched this forum, no real help.  At the bottom of the page, in response to the error message, was a comment 'need help with installation? call 1-800...'.  I am a night owl, it is 4 am on Sunday morning, I wasn't surprised to hear the recording 'office hours are ...'.

I finally figured out the right combination, and got the installation to complete successfully, but it wasn't easy.  I was almost ready to give up and try one of the other carts I looked at.  I should have made a screen pic of that database setup page.  I just tried to go back in order to post that data here, but I can not pull that page back up.  In trying to go back and see those pages, I no longer had the final installation page.  So I had to re-start the installation, it again completed successfully.

I was doing fine until I hit the last stage of the install process.  There were *many* forum posts from others that experienced the same error message, and more should be done to make the install user friendly, it would be especially helpful to folks who have never installed a web script before.

I am now deleting the install folder.  I didn't want to lose that "Your installation is finished!" page right away.  First I tried to right-click on the "Discover Your Store" button, but with all of the Java I guess, I was unable to bring up "Open Link in New Tab" with Firefox.  Then I *tried* to duplicate that tab but I got a 404 error 'file not found'.  Fortunately, when I did click on those buttons, they opened in a new tab.

I did save some of that data in a text file.
