How does a customer cancel an order?

Unfortunately Prestashop does not have this as default option, you have to buy module to allow this.

If you are (for time being) unwilling to pay for such module, the only option you have is to inform your customers that to cancel orders they must call you or send email and you must go in the back office to cancel the order. (or program your own feature around this).

 

In my humble opinion, we are already in 2014, why PrestaShop have not included such basic feature is beyond my understanding :-)

uhm, many big shops don't allow order cancellation, so it's not just PrestaShop.

 

impulse buyers are less likely to 'cancel' and order if they have to do more than simple click

I do agree with you on this, there is many shops that does not allow the customer to cancel the orders. But in my 20++ years with Internet and online-shopping i have seen both methods used. I remember my first shopping experience from a Norwegian computer shop, and i did i a mistake in my order, i called the shop and asked what to do. They kindly told me to login to my account, go to my order-page and from there i could cancel at anytime, up to the moment the order was processed.

 

I do see your point of impulse buyers, it is indeed a good strategy (which i also agree with you on), but i was thinking more for those "unlucky" customers that time-after-time keep making mis-orders, it would be more convenient to have their own cancel-button, and then make a new order with the correct items and/or numbers of items. In my mind i picture if a customer do many small purchases from a particular shops, but do wrong each time, he would have like 10 emails each month to cancel. He would probably also get nick-name "Most valuable mis-order customer" :-)

 

Again, not a "bad word" about PrestaShop, i simply love it, but there is small features here and there that i believe it could improve uppon. Which i cross my fingers and believe it will do in the future :-)

I know 'top notch' shops offer cancel order for x time, x being for example item in shipment process, then you can't.  (newegg)

 

For historicals old enough remember when AOL had a cancel membership button, but they learned quickly to remove it.

 

I see a reason to offer cancel when item has not been marked as 'preparing for shipment' or higher. :)  that would be cool especially when 'good' customer bought wrong widget and wants to order correct one.
