upgrading PHP?

Recommended Posts

hi, I am currently using a very old version of Prestashop 1.3 and am happy with it!
I would consider upgrading to a newer version, but having read some of the forum comments, it sounds like a bit of a nightmare….and I am not sure I can do this!

Meanwhile, my web host has announced that I should upgrade PHP on my site to 5.4.
Can anybody tell me how I might do this please?

thankyou

Hi,  I use Prestashop 1.4.8 and had to migrate to a new server, I backed up the database and manually copied all files from server to my local drive.  I then uploased everything to new server and imported the database... changed a few settings and it all worked.... and to boot the new server has a newer php version.

I also discovered a program called SOLO by Akeeba backup  https://www.akeebabackup.com/products/akeeba-solo.html which you install in the root of your site, then run it to create a complete backup.... load this file (a .jpa file) to new server and follow instructions from the Akeeba backup site to install the backup on new server.

hope this helps.

Steven

Some providers will actually allow you to select which version is enabled on your account from 5.2 up to 5.3 so check if your provider has anything like that.

Also consider importing your PrestaShop into Softaculous as that should be able to upgrade you to the latest version (though ensure you have backups).

Regarding upgrade:

 - there are usual two obstacles: custom modules and the theme. If you only use the default shop the upgrade is likely to work. Only you know how much of those two things you have and how much you care about them.

 - If you don't use special modules and your theme is not too specific you might look for a 1.6 theme that you like.

The first thing I would do in your place is to install a copy of your shop on your local computer and see how it works under PHP 5.4. Just a matter of downloading the files (skip the product images - they are not important here), making a copy of the database and making a few changes.

Other people here advise moving to another provider that still has PHP 5.3 or 5.2. I don't recommend that. It is a lot of work and in the end you might find out that that provider upgrades his PHP too - only a few months later.
