Product Quantity won't change without refresh

My products each have the "+ and -" buttons so that items can be increased or decreased.  However, when the buttons are clicked, nothing actually changes until I do a refresh of the page.  At that point, both the quantifies and the prices change to reflect the accurate numbers and amounts. 

 

What do I need to do to make the product and price change immediately after clicking the appropriate buttons, without the customer having to do a page refresh every time?

Oh, and the same goes with removing the product with the garbage can.  Nothing is shown until a page refresh.

For anyone interested, I disabled the ajax cart and now it works. The only difference is that I no longer have the animation, but at least products can now be added and deleted.
