TWDesign
As some of you may have heard, Magento Go will shut down from next February 2015. They are advising users to migrate across to BigCommerce but I suspect a lot of online shop owners will find that there are better alternatives - such as self hosting with PrestaShop. We've put together a little analysis of Prestashop vs BigCommerce for those interested. http://www.tokyowebdesigns.com/advice/3003/why-choose-prestashop-over-bigcommerce
happylife
I agree with the article. The target of Bigcommerce and Prestashop is not the same. BigCommerce is a hosted solution for people who wants the strict minimum whereas prestashop is a 'do it by yourself' philosophy
iero
i agree, magento CE is also a "do it your self or hire a developer" who can help you, prestashop, magento, same philosophy
TWDesign
i agree, magento CE is also a "do it your self or hire a developer" who can help you, prestashop, magento, same philosophy Yes, except that PrestaShop is an easy to manage solution. Magento is a beast! If you read the post you would have seen that by their own admission, Magento is not meant for small to medium business owners or startups. I realize too that BigCommerce is a SaaS platform whereas Prestashop is self hosted. The article deals with the differences between those approaches and the pros/cons of each. At the end of the day, they are just different ways of getting the same result - online sales!
iero
i disagree when you said magento is not meant for medium or small business, what could be the reason? i dont see how it can not be, at the contrary, more options, more power at your fingertips, u wont pay $5 for hosting, but with $15-20 you are pretty good if you dont have much traffic, i dont see other disadvantage, if you are small you probably wont need big modifications to core, so, well, its not the topic, just clearing things up
TWDesign
Not my words. The words of Magento Senior Director of Marketing, Craig Peasley. "Magento Community is the open-source version of the platform, which means the code is accessible and editable by the public, and was the first product Magento launched in 2007. It’s not a platform for e-retailers who are just starting out, Peasley says, but for retailers who are looking for flexibility and are generating more than $500,000 in web sales. Magento Enterprise is for large e-retailers who do several million in web sales, Peasley says, and is available on a subscription basis." - Craig Peasley (July 2014) http://www.internetretailer.com/2014/07/01/magento-will-pull-plug-magento-go-and-prostores Edited September 2, 2014 by TWDesign (see edit history)
