Simple htaccess RewriteRule won't work

Hello All,

 

I'm trying to make a nice looking url to a tag listing, i.e. 

http://www.playdateshoppe.com/search?tag=Moccasins rewritten as http://www.playdateshoppe.com/moccasins

I put the following on the top of my .htaccess, but I just get a 404

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^/moccasins/?$ /search?tag=Moccasins [NC,L]

I am positive the rewrite module is installed as it's my own VPS and been rewriting for years. Also, PS rewrites work just fine. I'm stumped.
