Is a Friendly URL only utilized while active in BO?

My issue:
I am uploading over 5,000 products via csv.
I broke it down to 1,000 per csv, and it would only import around 600 products.

So, I trimmed it down to 500 per csv.

Still takes a bit of time for each file to import but I do get the full 500 to import.

 

My question:
I currently have Friendly URL enabled.
If I turn off Friendly URL while I import my csv files, I'm hoping it will cut down my csv import time.
If once I am done importing my csv, and turn Friendly URL back on, will it re-write all the products I imported's URL's to Friendly URL's? (I hope so ! LOL )

I don't think that switching friendly URL to off would be of any help..PS creates the friendly URL in BO even if it's turned off (at least from my experience in PS 1.6.) and I have no reason to think that the import function is different.

If you struggle with CSV import, try either a faster hosting, or import everything on your localhost and then simply transfer products/categories to your main site.
