Registration and login from back-office without email field

Hello, 

I need to register the customers from the back-office without necessarily using the email field. Think that I must change the field "Email required" (but I don't know where to find it). Then I may modify the login in front-office by change the mail field with firstname.lastname or with a customer number. Can I do that? How? Which files should I change? I searched in web but haven't found answers. Can you help me? Thank you.

I'd say that this requires quite a lot of custom coding, as in PS email is one of the key variables for creating new customers. This would require to create a new form, which would evade the necessity of email address for new customers. Not an easy thing to do I suppose.
