PS 1.6 - How to display first line as list and following as grid on homepage

Hi, 

 

I would like to show first line of products in list view (i.e. only 1 product would show in list view) and the following ones as usual, that is grid view 4 products per line on homepage. How can I achieve this, could I change a category, say featured products or newly created category as list and then follow up with popular and top sellers categories which would show in grid? 

 

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated or a link to the same topic if already discussed elsewhere on the forum.
