benwiggy
Do I need to create a "Home" category, as well as having a "root"? Or can I just have a bunch of categories immediately under Root?
vekia
home category is necessary, in fact - this is root category
NemoPS
Unless you specify another root category, yes, you do
benwiggy
1. I deleted all the demo data with the cleaner add-on. 2. I try to create my first category. 3. There is already a Root parent to select when I define the category, but no Home. 4. The demo data has root and home as two separate things. When I create "Home", do I need to select anything to make it special, or not? Currently, the first category I create does not show in the Back Office list until I create another one. benwiggy
So.... I need to create a Home category as my very first category. Do I need to define it as root? That doesn't seem possible in the BO, but is possible by importing a CSV. If anyone can tell me how to add the very first category to an otherwise empty database, I would be very grateful. Currently, if I manually add the first one, it is invisible in the BO list. Only after adding a second category will it appear. None of my categories appear in the front office. Importing a CSV produces errors. I've got another thread for this. Thanks! Edited April 25, 2014 by benwiggy (see edit history)
benwiggy
Prestashop want £180 to fix the problems I'm having. Since I am unable to add a single Category to PS, I'm going to try OpenCart.
NemoPS
You mean you can't select "is root category" when adding a new one? As things might have got corrupted, login to phpmyadmin and set the new category id as base category of the default shop (should be id=1)
benwiggy
There's nothing that says "Is Root Category". I can set root to be the Parent folder, which is why I asked the difference between root and Home. I can now create a Home category, but it's ID = 5. Does it need to be ID = 1 ? Ideally, that's what I would like, so I'll try editing the database directly. Hopefully, I can then import all my other categories after that. Can you give a bit of instruction as to what I need to change in the database? There's 5 separate tables, and there's a root AND Home. Thanks. vekia
you can use only one root category. and don't remove it, it's necessary. change id of home to
benwiggy
Argh. Home has disappeared again. It does not display in the list of Categories in the Back Office. I can create new categories, and Home is listed as a Parent in the Edit window. I can see the list of subcategories under Home in the Back Office, but if I go back to Root, Home is not there. No Categories are displayed in the front shop. I haven't edited the database: The only thing I've done to the entire shop is added two categories. I've tried this several times, and it still doesn't work. What am I doing wrong? So, I need to have root and Home, but does Home need to be a Root category or not? I seem to be getting conflicting advice. And there's no control I can find that says "Is Root Category". Is there anything else I need to do when creating Home to make it special in any way? I've tried countless times to create a shop with PS 1.4 and 1.5 and I can't get past this point. I am not normally stupid. I created my own shop and templates in 1.3.1 and that works.
