Discontinued products

With PS 1.4.9 when a product be discontinued the only solution is to cheange status from enabled to disabled.

I don't like this method because i think it's not good to remove all the discotinued products.

 

 

For discontinued products i want to maintain them online but only reaching throw a direct link, so doesn't show in category/subcategory, new, price reduction, best seller and search result page.

 

 

I thinked to add a new product state (new, occasion...) and then in product-list.tpl add an "if" to check if the product is not discontinued, otherwise doesn't show it.

 

 

Do you think that this could be a good solution or maybe there's something easier to do that?

a good reason to upgrade is that in 1.5+ one can set a redirect from the product level, i.e. edit product and tell ps what to do when 'disabled'

 

this is because disable without results in a 404...this is bad bad for seo.

 

for those on earlier ps, then you NEED to add redirects for that product, to another product, home page...somewhere...not 404...

 

check with presto-changeo I think they may have module to help you solve 404 redirect....

If it were as easy as upgrading wordpress I surely already upgraded it to last version, but unfortunatelly with PS is a problem, i have a custom theme with a lot of changes and upgrading PS need a new theme design, because i'm sure mine isn't compatible.

then you need redirects....nothing I wrote changes.

 

and I understand upgrade is not appealing.
