Tax shipping in some states, not others

My company has offices in about half the US States and thus we have to follow the sales tax laws for each of those states. Some of them require us to tax the shipping charges as well as the product itself. Others just the product and not the shipping. I haven't been able to find a way to do this yet. Is it possible?

We would like to use only FedEx realtime charges.

Thanks for any help.

I believe you would do this using 2 different Tax Rules

The first tax rule would be used for the products.  Lets call this the "Product Tax Rule".  You would create this rule, configure it based on your store locations and tax rates, and then assign "Product Tax Rule" to all of your products

The second tax rule would be used for carriers.  Lets call this the "Carrier Tax Rule".  You would create this rule, configure it for only those states which require tax on shipping and the tax rates, and then assign "Carrier Tax Rule" to your carriers.

We have just released a Tax module that uses the FREE 3rd party service TaxCloud

The module calculates the exact tax rate by the street address, lets you assign different TIC codes to your products (in case some are not taxed), and it also sends all the information to TaxCloud (which can be used to file your sales tax automatically in many states).

This is the only way to charge the correct taxes for each customers, as there are multiple tax rates for each state, and even multiple rates for a single zip code.

While some states tax pension benefits, only 14 states impose a tax on Social Security income: Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and West Virginia. These states either tax Social Security income to the same extent that the federal government does or provide breaks for Social Security income, often for lower-income individuals.
