Redirect product old page to new page

I currently have an issue with some products on our prestashop 1.5.4.1 website. I have updated several product reference numbers but the new references will not show on the front end of the store. (old ref still shows). I have tried clearing smarty cache but this hasn't resolved the issue.

 

My only other way of doing this and keep my existing Google page link is to create a new product with the correct reference number showing and redirect the old URL to the new product URL hence not displaying a product doen't exist message and Google dropping the page from their list.

 

I've tried to use this method within my .htaccess file but it will not work, can anyone shed any light on this?
