you will not loose your website data, but never do upgrade on live site

do it first in dev environment

you will avoid unexpected problems

Yes, but sometimes also roll-back fails. If you upgrade major releases, plese do not upgrade live shop. make a clone and upgrade on this clone.

How to clone, please find my short tutorial here: http://www.prestashop.com/forums/topic/313999-tutorial-how-to-clone-your-shop-for-upgrades/

for PS 1.5. php-upgrade does not take any effect, if your provider do it or not. BTW it is better he upgrade the php version for to avoid problems with latest Prestashop Versions. So for you no problem.

I still have my website in version 1.5.0.17 and PHP 5.2.17.

I have postponed any upgrade to my version of PS because I've done a lot of customization and fear have problems.

However, I have read here that it is recommended to climb to PHP 5.4, being more stable and 30% faster than 5.3.

I wonder if I do well in asking to my hosting to moving to 5.3 or 5.4? I will not have problems?
