Error 500 after emptying smarty cache Autoload cache

Emptying smarty cache Autoload cache causes an error 500. Please help!

 

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

if you've got 500 internal server error, turn on error reporting, then instead of simple 500 error you will see detailed information about issue (what and where doesnt work)

 

i bet on memory problems (not enough memory to rebuild cache files)

Sorry if I have to resume this ancient post but... in case the issue actually is the lack of memory, how can I solve it? My entire front-end is unavailable and my boss is in "panic mode"...
