Caching...which one for me?

Prestashop 1.4.1.0, linux dedicated server, SSD drives, 16GB ram. Number of products in store approx 2000 with 3 images each.

I've been a lurker for quite a while, reading a lot of the valuable information, but not posting anything.

 

We moved servers a few weeks ago and enabled memcached on the new server. I have a feeling it is causing issues and would like to turn it off to see if some issues go away.

 

I'd like to keep caching as I understand it is essential...

 

My first question is if I have Cache under the Smarty enabled but use cache under caching/caching system disabled does this mean the smarty wont cache either or only that common php wont be cached?

 

My second question is based on that I have 2000 products in the shop and SSD's to deliver the files from am I good to go with filesystem as a basis for caching and if so how many directories would be good to use (I couldn't find any info on how this is calculated).
