Discounts by quantity per category

For a site I am creating I Will be selling post cards. I'd like to set it up so that 10 post cards or more gets a % discount etc. I know you can do that per item but is there a way to say that if you get 10 or more of any item in a category you get a % discount?

I think you can only do this by means of a coupon code added on the shopping cart page.
