Using Suppliers table question. Search on custom fields in supplier table.

Questions:

I want to use the supplier table similar to these two posts.

I want to add firstname, lastname, date-of-birth, etc to the supplier table.

Then I want to be able to search on last name of supplier.

Also, I want to create an A-Z bar to click on letter to search.

 

Is this possible?

If so, how should I start?
