VPS, Dedicated or Ordinary Hosting??

Recommended Posts

As per the title, which is the best to run your prestashop store on.

My current sire is lacking in a SSL, I rely on Paypal to process the payments but would like to install an SSL of my own and use Paypals Virtual Terminal and also use Offline Credit Card Processing but after looking around the forum SSL looks to be a bit hit and miss.

Am I best to get ordinary hosting with a dedicated ip address, install a SSL cert and go with that

or

Spend the extra cash on a mid range dedicated server, SSL cert

or

Does the latest version of Prestashop work on a VPS, where again I could install a SSL and hopefully everything woukld work as it should.

Hope this makes sense as it did when I typed this.
My current site runs on version 1.1.0.5 It has no problems and I like the way the site looks and seems to run with no problems. It is still very much a basic Prestashop theme but seems to work very well for me.

I use Surpass Hosting and love it! http://www.surpasshosting.com/hosting-shared-solutions.php They offer a pro plan for $15 dollar a month which includes 9999GB Disk Space, Unmetered Bandwidth, Unlimited Domains and FREE Private IP, FREE SSL Certificate.
I have had no down time only one problem with the PHP memory_limit being set too low with one module I tried. I put in a ticket and a less then a hour later they had fixed it. My site is at www.zoom-tech.net/index.php and while I am still working on it I love Presta.
Good luck!

You can definitely install SSL on a store that doesn't run on a dedicated server, however for the very best in speed and performance the extra outlay for a dedicated server means you can have a lot more people browsing your store at the same time and installing SSL is straightforward.

Like most things, you get what you pay for, but I don't see why you cannot run a successful store on shared hosting (as long as you know what you are doing).

@bigstef

First of all we need to know better what kind of websites do you have. Is it a new one? Is it established, etc.
If your website is fairly new with not too many visitors, a shared hosting it will work, but if you plan to advertise your website and to get like 1000 visitors per day, you should consider a VPS or a dedicated server.

On the other hand you should update your version of prestashop....just google prestashop 1.1 vulnerabilities ;)

Later Edit - I didn't notice that the OP opened this thread 19 September 2009 :).

If you want to try reliable and fast VPS service you should try Limy VPS. They offer free trial VPS account for 7 days and you can order any of their VPS packages for trial. I have a small ecommerce site and I am very pleased with their technical support and service they provide. After trial period expired I decided to sign up to their monthly Limy VPS Ultimately Plan. Finally got the best solution with Limy VPS.
