How to create a Categories page with all root categories and make it the home page?

you can do it in many ways.

for example, with module. Create module and attach it to HomeHook. (copy of blockcategories module with modified template file)

 

 

second option: index controller modification, create there functions to get category tree (the same as blockCategories module) and display them as a new .tpl file located in your theme directory
