Make current theme responsive and/or expand theme

Hi, i'm currently using the default theme (ver 1.5.4.1) and i've made several editions to its files, so what i was looking for is:

-a way to make the current theme responsive

- a way to get rid of the white spaces at the sides (by getting rid of the spaces or expanding what's inside, whatever is easier)

1) you can do responsiveness with media queries.

Unfortunately there is no "universal" way to make responsive theme, you will need to do it by yourself.
