(SOLVED) "Sort By" Leaves No Products

The 'sort by' function in my shop (1.5.4.1) has stopped working.  It just says 'No products' when you select any of the sorting criteria- even when there are tons of products that should show up.  

 

It was not working for a while.  Then I changed some settings and it started working- I just don't know why it keeps bringing up 'no products'.

Should I perhaps just get rid of the sort by function?  I don't really need it, especially the sort by name function.

After reading more on the forums, I uncovered that the 'sort by' function stops working when layered navigation is enabled.  I disabled layered navigation, then the sort by started working again.  I didn't dig through github for a fix.  The post I read was a couple of months old, and it didn't look like a fix for the bug was available yet.  

 

Hope this info helps somebody out with the same issue.

Can you reproduce your error on this page?

I was taking some screenshots of this for you, but it is sorting the products when I have layered navigation enabled.  Go figure....  Could that be something to do with the cache maybe?  

 

It is no big deal, as I don't want to use layered navigation right now.  I was wondering how to turn off the sort by name function specifically, but I have that question on a different thread...  If you know how, here it is:
